Critical infrastructure upgrade (14 March 2026)

 

Dear Mount Edgecombe residents,

Link Layer is rolling out a critical infrastructure upgrade to your area!

The new technology should improve network stability, improve network monitoring and reduce issue resolution time. Unfortunately, this upgrade does require that the router in your home (AKA the ONT) is replaced, with a brand-new device:

 

Date: 14 March 2026

Time: 09:00 – 17:00

 

Good to know: 

  • The upgrade is completely free to you, and you will not be charged for this upgrade.

 

  • The Link Layer team will need to recover the existing device and will need to access your home to replace and reconfigure the new router. (ONT)

 

  • Existing routers (ONT’s) will no longer work after this upgrade has been completed, and your internet connection will be lost. If you are unable to attend the upgrade on the above date, please contact (Link Layer Number) to book a more convenient date and time for your upgrade.

 

  • You may experience a short amount of network downtime during the upgrade process between (09:00 – 17:00) on Saturday 14 March 2026, and Sunday 15 March 2026.

Unfortunately, earlier today part of the Link Layer fibre network was damaged when a earch moving vehicle did damage to a main feeder cable while conducting work on a residents property. Teams are already on site and have begun repair the damaged fibre. Unfortunately damage to the cable was quite extensive and may take some time to repair.

03 February 2026 – 17:00 Update:

Unfortunately repairs to the feeder cable have taken longer than expected, and some clients may still be experiencing connectivity problems, technicians have almost completed the work and restoration of services is underway. We will provide a further update at 18:00 this evening.
